Who is Lily Tomlin? Remember Mrs. Frizzle in The Magic School Bus? Yup That’s her!!
Grandma is not a film that is a must-see, It is a film where if you are relaxing on a Sunday afternoon and you wanna get out and do something. That is where this belongs at. I am not saying that is a bad thing, I am just saying. I am so glad that Lily Tomlin’s career is back on track, cause I’ve been a little bit of a fan of hers since Mrs. Frizzle in The Magic School Bus. As much as that children’s show is corny and dated, It still brings back memories for me.
I really liked Grandma,I thought it was a funny and simple dramedy. The casting of Lily Tomlin as this very hard headed old lady was absolutely perfect and adds a lot to the film’s humor as well. Paul Weitz (Director/Screenwriter) creates a very clever set up as the movie is taken in one day just following these two characters as they try to get the money to get Julia Garner’s character an abortion. Weitz creates these variety of characters from Lily Tomlin and Julia Garner’s characters personal life as she encounters them to try to get money from them. What is clever here is it gives us more development about her character and that goes especially to Julia Garner’s character as well. Showing that these people are kind of lost in a way as human beings. In short, it is a fantastic screenplay.
My only issue with the film is that the movie is an Hour and Eighteen Minutes and some scenes kind of feel pointless and feel like Weitz puts in in just to lengthen the run time. Like when Lily Tomin and Julia Garner are in a coffee shop that use to be an abortion clinic or when there in a tattoo parlor shop asking for an old friend for some money. If anything towards the end I was feeling that this movie is a little too long just because how much the film tries to drag itself to reach that 90 minute mark at the most.
In the end, Grandma is a funny, charismatic film with fantastic performances from Lily Tomlin, Julia Garner, and its supporting well-known cast. Even if the film stretches itself a little too much.
Overall Grade: B+
