I am always getting Jason Clarke mixed up with Joel Edgerton. I don’t know I just do!
Everest is directed by Baltasar Kormakur and stars Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Emily Watson, Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, and Jake Gyllenhall. Humongous cast!
I remember when I first heard about this film I was just like “Finally! This story is getting told now!”
Back in my elementary school days, all my teachers ever talked about was Mt. Everest is a dangerous place to climb. I got hammered with the message so much that I remember at 13-years-old saying “How come we haven’t made a movie on it yet?” Seeing the advertisements, I felt like I was going to see another version ofGravity. In one of the posters, the tagline says “Never Let go.” No familiar references yet? Well at least were on the same page!
Is this movie good? Somewhat. Do they make Mt. Everest look good? ABSOLUTELY! This is probably one of the best looking movies I think I’ve seen all year. Especially in 3D! There are not many 3D movies out there I praise. In fact, I pretty much hate 3D. This is a movie you have to see in theaters 3D Guaranteed! You will not be disappointed! The performances from Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, or Jake Gyllenhall are also fantastic.
What disappoints me about this film, however, is its linear screenplay and its direction towards the last half of the film. The first half or so I was really enjoying how this crew assembles, and how they go about their trip together. Until I realized, I don’t really know who these people are. A lot of its characters don’t feel fleshed out, and it never gives us a real reason why they wanted to go up to the top of Mt. Everest in the first place. Except for Brolin’s and Hawkes’ characters.
When we get to the part where the storm hits, and they have to survive, I felt the director could not keep that exhilaration of the first half. The second half where they have to survive is a drag to sit though. My major issue with this film is that I never felt the emotional impact by the end. All I got from it was Mt. Everest is bad.NO SHIT IT’S BAD! If anything, the film rushes towards the end making us not feel that emotional impact that we need from it! I might add that, because it drags towards its second half, the movie felt way too long! For a film that is just 2 hours, that’s saying something!
Everest has an excellent ensemble cast and dazzling cinematography. However, towards the end it lacks on pacing, characters, and emotion. Eh, Forgettable!
